This past weekend more than fifty CUE-Teamster leaders and staff from almost every campus came together to kickoff our campaign to get a fair contract that respects the sacrifices and contributions made to the University of California by its 14,000 clerical and allied services workers.

At our meeting in Los Angeles, in addition to doing some contract planning, we got an overview of how the Teamsters work, a legal update, and an overview of how to run strategic contract campaigns.

Union's Strong Track Record the Decisive Factor

WASHINGTON, May 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The International Brotherhood of Teamsters announced today that it has formally affiliated with the 14,000-strong Coalition of University Employees (CUE), making the University of California Union a chartered Teamster Local.

The agreement comes after the overwhelming majority – 81 percent – of voting members voted in favor of the affiliation. CUE represents 14,000 administrative and library assistants, cashiers, public safety dispatchers and many other clerical employees at 11 University of California campuses throughout the state.

Bargaining

On Thursday, May 13, 2010, Annabelle Song-Hill, the state-appointed mediator, certified CUE and UC to PERB to go to Fact-Finding. This is the result of CUE and UC not reaching an agreement on a new contract during the mediation sessions. In the certification, the mediator has also indicated CUE and UC have agreed to return for a mediation session after Fact-Finding before imposition of its final offer during contract negotiations by the University.

The next step is the selection of the three member fact-finding panel and certification of the panel by PERB. Both CUE and UC will have one representative on the panel, and PERB will designate a neutral party. Once the dates for the Fact-Finding hearing are set, we will notify the CUE jurisdiction.

In the coming weeks we will also provide additional information on the process and ongoing progress of negotiations.
